RacesCeresian

Homeworld: The Ceresians call the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter their home. They are named for the largest asteroid, Ceres, which is where they were first found, due to it being home to the largest colony of these creatures.

Gravity: The gravity of the asteroid belt ranges from >0 to 2sgu (0.293m/s²), with Ceres at the highest.

Physical Statistics

Ceresians are compound creatures, with some being able to separate and still be viable, while some require being connected to the rest in order to stay alive. They are composed of a roundish core resembling an eye, with numerous, segmented tentacles extending outward. The core possesses a large, focal lens that can function as both an eye and focus for a laser (see diet). The tentacles contain and are the other organs of the creature, and all parts of a Ceresian compose the nervous system and brain.
Ceresians communicate via radio waves, though in atmosphere they are capable of detecting and producing sound in a manner similar to a microphone/speaker.

Diet

(daily intake in kCal; requirements; variety)
The base critter that composes a Ceresian before specialization forms a natural solar panel, helping to provide most of the energy required. Ceresians consume minerals and metals, typically by melting or otherwise obliterating matter via laser fired by a specialized organ that composes the "core". The particles are ionized using stored radiation and then drawn toward the (feeding stalks) using magnetic manipulation. From there, the material is broken up to its smallest necessary size and sent throughout the rest of the organism.

Lifecycle

Ceresians are asexual, and reproduce via budding, though multiple Ceresians may contribute an undifferentiated tentacle in order to spawn more mature Ceresian to start with. Otherwise, Ceresians will begin life as a small, barnacle-like creature that consumes minerals from wherever it is stuck, putting down roots as it feeds and growing a large solar sail out of its wastes. Eventually, when the local area has been drained of resources, the young larva will break off and sail to find a new location. It can remain in hibernation for many years until it hits a usable site, and after several cycles of going through these migrations, it will either have formed a main core, or have found another young ceresian to fuse with. Upon creating a core, the Ceresian is considered mature, though most will stave off budding until they are far more complete in form, with at least 20 tentacles in total.
