Lynn

Lynn is a watersmith in the Kingdom of Rice. She became a subject of the Sorceress after learning that she could get rid of her male body by a relatively simple brain transplant, and she's been single-handedly responsible for the publication of a scroll on fluidic computation that is now used in many kingdoms and trade houses to handle finances. Lynn's original male body lives on in ullathoid pieces doing duty in the Sorceress' castle. (This is obviously a reference to Lynn Conway, and the "Glooper" water computer). Lynn built a water computer for the Seamstress as well, and pays her tithe by occasionally traveling to her realm and doing maintenance or upgrades to it.

A madam wanted to offer "specialty options" for her whorehouse. After discovering that most of the "talent" wasn't there because they wanted to be, even though the madam had coached them to ask as if by their own free will to be modified, the Seamstress complied -- but also gave the girls short-range telepathy. Within a week, they had gotten rid of the madam and her guards thanks to uncanny coordination, and were running the whorehouse as a cooperative. However, even then, the Seamstress refused to remove the modifications to the girls who asked.

The minute, energetic Kerbians claim that they've been able to fire a manned trebuchet-assisted rocket across the Mountain Wall. This is true. Their scout even emerged from the wreckage alive, at that. However, he was quickly captured, since a wooden rocket capsule that uses retrorockets for braking is quite visible. The New State claims to have rescued the scout from a burning wreckage (which is pretty believable) and quickly returned him to his realm. He reports that the tunnel takes about a day to cross by Conestoga wagon, that he was blindfolded for most of the trip, and that what he saw was a lot of farmland interspersed with little towns, very well built roads, and little else.

First they came for the trans folks. I spoke out. I didn't have a following, hardly anybody listened. Then they came for the gay folks. I spoke out. I didn't have a following, hardly anybody listened. Then they came for the atheists. I spoke out. I didn't have a following, hardly anybody listened. Then they came for me. I spoke out. I didn't have a following, I wasn't important enough. so they did not listen. I burned out their eyes with an industrial laser. Now they wail in pain and fear. I do not listen.

 - Keen (the mad scientist), in a cry for help.

"You can't kill God. You can kill -a- God, but people would just keep worshiping the corpse. I tried to get my followers to stop worshiping me and they took my eyes and cast me out in the name of the idea of me. Killing the idea of God is a lot harder."

"Kill the god, burn the corpse, repeat when the next god shows up. Eventually they'll run out."

"It doesn't work."

"It works a little bit, and it's nice to watch jackboots melt from plasma beans."

"Beams."

"Everyone expects plasma beams. Nobody expects plasma beans. It's better than a claymore."

- A conversation between Keen and Paul Atreides
