DesignDoc[6:25:45 AM] cs_riley: I think I might put a bit of effort into fleshing out at least a baisc not-actually-shadowrun-ripoff of Streets of 2040 and try to resume that game if possible. I know we've got two games going on right now, and FSP is about as available as the only whore on a pirate ship, but when we do have the option I will try to at least have the crunch ready? [6:48:39 AM] cs_riley: honestly I should just create a framework and share most of the equipment with Kip's game [6:48:49 AM] cs_riley: cybersuits from 2040 and centurions frames are basically the same animal [7:00:58 AM] cs_riley: So, here's my unique plot. The world died of boredom. Basically, things just kept drifting as they currently are: towards more monotonous, specialized individuals and jobs, obedience and indoctrination training from birth. Around 2020 the prison apocalypse in the US happened, but it happened during a Trump presidency so he blamed the Mexicans and issued a mass pardon to prisoners who ended up just kinda taking over Mexican jobs. The megaprisons that survived the riots and bombings were converted to internment camps, a smaller scale holocaust happened, and it was all swept under the historical rug because Real Americans got jobs and the country had something it could pretend was a middle class again. Corporate statism never happened. It's a mashup of nations and flags and lobbyists and partnerships and trade agreements etc. I can detail this more later. Then all that scare of a pandemic finally happened. Bird Flu out of China wiped out 2/3 of the pacific rim, and all told about a third of the world's population - North America was decimated, Asia was devastated, and the EU just kept trucking on, but they had their own problems. Notably, the European War. Basically a mirror of the prison apocalypse in the United States, at a state level, it started with an all out brawl in the UN assembly when the Italian PM called out the British. A couple hours, a broken nose, and some temporary detentions later, and the nations for totalitarian austerity and the nations against were marching to war. The european trade coalition: Britain, France, Portugal, Belgium, Spain; supported by the US monetarily and much of the Commonwealth with troops. The european freedom coalition: Italy, Greece, Serbia, Romania, and mostly other poor eastern European countries. One note, however; just to put the boot in, they were supported by Russia. It went about as well as you'd think. The freedom coalition's cities were occupied by troops, the trade coalition's cities were occupied by guerillas. Nobody won jack shit and it devastated the European economy for two years before terms were finally negotiated; an EU-mandated universal minimum wage, an international relief bank for the EU's poorer nations to draw on the richer ones that spent the last 20 years bleeding them dry, and a compromise on stricter anti-immigration policies to the EU. It became a fortress of mediocre prosperity. [7:01:28 AM] cs_riley: Some of the uniqueness of Europe was lost, but at the end of the day the Italians and the Greeks and the rest of the everyday people just kept on doing. They do that. ^^ [7:03:02 AM] cs_riley: That puts us into 2030; at this point the world was Doing Okay, from an overall perspective. The environmental crisis was being solved, ish. European emissions by this point were all but zero, North America still lagged behind but the average joe drove an electric car, and pacific rim nations emissions dropped massively because most people were dead. [7:03:22 AM] cs_riley: So why is this dystopian? Well, look at the everyday life of joe get up, go to work, go home, have his media and culture fed to him by his overlords. [7:05:17 AM] cs_riley: Because while all that progress was happening, the media control of the trade congolmerates got stronger and stronger, and everyone just lives in a TV (well, it's 3d now) delusion. Sure the average life expectancy is 110 years, but it's 110 years of boring hell of "contributing to society" - its complex economy that's mostly financiers and trading hats. Tech and engineering still happens, but the inventors get their little share in a big company and get swept under the rug. There's no credit, no glamour, it's what you're expected to do once in a while to keep your job. [7:05:38 AM] cs_riley: Folks like you? Well...they don't get that right to make money on the open market. [7:06:12 AM] cs_riley: This takes us into 2040...but what about all that talk of magic? Well...there's one other group that really has no love for that kind of boring, monotonous world, and that's the FAIRIES. [7:08:11 AM] M K B: miwrning [7:08:13 AM] M K B: reads [7:08:22 AM] M K B: This is the best backstory ever for a game of changeling :D [7:08:23 AM] M K B: go on! [7:08:29 AM] M K B: please! [7:13:38 AM] M K B: seriously, aweosmsauce [7:31:55 AM] M K B: [7:40:23 AM] cs_riley: lol changeling? [7:40:34 AM] cs_riley: I guess the Event would be a fun changeling game. Sorry for not going on, work happened [7:40:36 AM] cs_riley: gimme a bit :* [7:48:58 AM] cs_riley: yeah, incoherent screaming here, sec. [7:49:08 AM] cs_riley: I'll write more when I'm not buried in retards. [7:49:35 AM] M K B: :* [7:51:22 AM] cs_riley: :* [7:51:27 AM] cs_riley: k I have a second [7:52:22 AM] cs_riley: So fairies are creatures of imagination and wonder, of dreams, legends, and pixie dust. The Winged Folk are really only one kind of fairy, most magical creatures that aren't dragons or undead are some kind of fey. [7:52:58 AM] cs_riley: Here's the thing though: fairies aren't stupid, at least not the greater courts, and they knew they'd need to store up a whole buncha extra chaos for when this happened. [7:53:19 AM] cs_riley: So they summoned up their ol' buddy Discord, and told him to fuck up the world. [7:53:23 AM] cs_riley: ...wrong thing to do. [7:53:29 AM] cs_riley: They didn't tell him to fuck up the human world. [7:53:32 AM] cs_riley: Or the fairy world. [7:53:37 AM] cs_riley: So he just did the most obvious thing [7:53:39 AM] cs_riley: and merged the two. [7:54:15 AM] cs_riley: So the ley lines lit back up like a christmas tree overnight. Fairies and elves and trolls and orcs and dwarves and all the mystical creatures of the otherworld were shunted into Earth proper. [7:57:14 AM] cs_riley: Needless to say this freaked people out and there was a very mixed response to how to deal with it. The more monstrous creatures were either killed or driven off with attempted killings at the outset, whereas other critters managed to find people who spoke the old tongues and communicate...and learn. [7:58:09 AM] cs_riley: Fey critters are used to adapting, and chaos. They learn fast. Most faded into the background of this vastly larger, more populous world. Others not so much, and chose to integrate more into human society. [7:58:28 AM] cs_riley: They're very much still landed immigrants in 2040, though; the event was a dozen years ago or so. [7:58:47 AM] cs_riley: They're used to us - but are we really used to THEM? [7:59:34 AM] cs_riley: The chaos fell through the cracks of orderly society - most of the world has gone on pretending most of it doesn't exist, and that the odd fey critter on the streets is just a weird person. [7:59:35 AM] M K B: interestingmiw! [8:00:15 AM] cs_riley: The world has swept a lot under the rug though, into places where the corporations and governments don't bother looking. One of those things is freedom. [8:00:42 AM] cs_riley: So in that chaos on the streets, there is a new life - a hard life, a brutal life without anyone to look after you - but there's freedom. [8:00:46 AM] cs_riley: and that's where the story begins. [8:01:05 AM] cs_riley: ...and yes, it's only been 12 years since the event and god only knows what ELSE was unleashed...MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA [8:02:08 AM] M K B: i like it! [8:02:35 AM] cs_riley: Yay! I thought it would fit in with the other very different places pretty decently. [8:02:53 AM] cs_riley: It's definitely the most "magical" world (I feel like tripo has more of a scifi/ghostbusters-y feel) [8:03:13 AM] cs_riley: There's a lot more unexplained-but-explained "it's magic. Duh." [8:03:36 AM] cs_riley: As for magic working all of a sudden, well, that's pretty simple; the worlds merged. All that stuff that hasn't worked since the Age of Camelot? Works again. [8:04:39 AM] cs_riley: Oh, yeah, that's the thing. The worlds were once one, but it was hard to tell because there was a lot less science being done, and a lot less recording of it. Merlin and Morgana Le Fey sealed the world of the fey off so the age of man could begin again. Nobody really knows if there were past events before that - was the Roman Empire built on the backs of fey power, or were they somehow irreverent of it? [8:04:49 AM] cs_riley: That's for the history books, and a question that could be answered one day, maybe [8:05:58 AM] cs_riley: Magic coming back was a big deal though. The first thing was that a lot of those ritualistic crazies (though there were fewer edge cases in the modern age, there were also a lot more pagans because nobody cares) found their magic suddnely WORKING. [8:06:39 AM] cs_riley: Society immediately wanted to study it and normalize it because fuck chaos [8:07:07 AM] cs_riley: Chaos is innate in magic, but taming that chaos has always been the domain of Wizards. [8:07:34 AM] cs_riley: So while you have a lot of different traditions and ways of practicing magic, they fall under two bulk classes: Wizards and Witches. [8:08:16 AM] cs_riley: Wizards use magic with a scientific understanding of the interactions of ley lines, and work by formulaic spells. Witches cast by ritual and talk more to the sources of power, using the ley lines as a data line rather than a power line [8:09:38 AM] M K B: nyan~ nicccccc [8:11:45 AM] cs_riley: so Attunement is basically your order/chaos bar [8:12:13 AM] cs_riley: cybertech lowers your attunement by making your body and mind more orderly (computer neural interfaces kinda do that) [8:13:13 AM] cs_riley: much like IL it's a young world with a lot to do and not as much established around the new order yet [8:13:41 AM] cs_riley: the first bachelor's of thaumaturgy was awarded within the last 5 years. Nobody knows jack shit. :P [8:17:21 AM] M K B: nyan~ nice!! i like. hm. google dracogenics [8:21:33 AM] cs_riley: oki [8:21:46 AM] cs_riley: but yeah I figure this and centurions can basically share crunch. [7:34:32 PM] cs_riley: There is no agreed upon biological definition of what a fairy is yet. It's colloquially used to mean "magical being, whose existence is at least to some degree tied to the presence of magical energy" [7:34:40 PM] M K B: o.o eek cazadores [7:34:43 PM] cs_riley: lol subspace [7:34:53 PM] M K B: hmm. so... [7:34:55 PM] M K B: well, first off [7:35:00 PM] cs_riley: all I think of when someone refers to subspace is the old multiplayer shooter :P [7:35:06 PM] M K B: how many people are still alive vs. how much of the world is still habitable [7:35:12 PM] M K B: coz that really helps define everything else [7:35:23 PM] Someguy Somewhere: so....living creature with <UNKNOWN> and they just fill in the gap with "suffiecently advanced magic" [7:35:26 PM] Panyk: 4b for people [7:35:36 PM] cs_riley: ballpark 4b yes [7:35:44 PM] cs_riley: food production right now is the big limiting reagent to population growth more than space [7:35:49 PM] cs_riley: the US dustbowl is a WASTELAND. [7:35:54 PM] Panyk: at least part of the continental US uninhabitable, middle east cloistered, africa tight bordered, from what I can infer [7:36:08 PM] cs_riley: middle east mostly uninhabitable [7:36:20 PM] cs_riley: (not that it was terribly inhabitable BEFORE 100 years of constant modern conventional warfare) [7:36:32 PM] Someguy Somewhere: the canadian praries did the whole dustbowl thing decades ago when "oops drought + windstorm = your topsoil is in another castle " [7:36:42 PM] Panyk: so you've got eastern and northern NA, russia, and I'm guessing mostly just south america from there because 'major war in europe' does not sound happymaking to me [7:36:45 PM] cs_riley: pacific rim could be producing a lot more food but population and infrastructure still rebuilding. [7:36:57 PM] cs_riley: major war in europe didn't ding the population as much as the culture. [7:36:58 PM] Panyk: er, russia + asia [7:37:10 PM] Kite Winters: how do tech and magic play with each other? if magic is about imagination and belief, can you have someone who's cybered up with wifi to be able to make their imaginings into AR around them for anyone who connects to their wifi to see, turning the enjoyment of their bespoke-simsense customers into a source of 'whatever mana gets called'? or deos the moment you chrome up at all mean you're stepping away fromt he Fade? [7:37:17 PM] cs_riley: as described it was more of a "police action" and not very bloody. [7:37:31 PM] Panyk: ah [7:37:31 PM] M K B: so more the yugoslavian separation than ww2 [7:37:33 PM] Panyk: so no bombs :P [7:37:37 PM] cs_riley: yeah, no bombs :P [7:37:46 PM] cs_riley: like it said, it was an immediate occupation by ground forces. [7:38:00 PM] cs_riley: and an immediate decision by the eastern europeans to retaliate by occupying the other side :P [7:38:17 PM] Someguy Somewhere: i'm with Kite on the "magic <=> tech" play nice or not question [7:38:25 PM] cs_riley: okay let's hit that then. [7:38:54 PM] Kite Winters: i mean, which side i favour is bloody obvious, i don't think i've ever written ANYTHING that was modern-or-later without magitek. [7:39:28 PM] cs_riley: So, magitek is something being experimented with. It's EXTREMELY experimental, nobody really knows how magic WORKS, and techological implementations tend to require a good understanding of how something works. Engineering is like that. [7:39:44 PM] cs_riley: Now, cybertech and human magic is a little different. [7:40:05 PM] cs_riley: Magic's nature is chaos. The computer's nature is order. [7:40:22 PM] cs_riley: Complex computer machines, and by connection cyborgs, by definition, repel magic [7:40:48 PM] Someguy Somewhere: hmm... [7:41:04 PM] M K B: so analog electronics -would- play nice with magic? :p [7:41:05 PM] cs_riley: It's not so much about being "less human" as much as being "more ordered" [7:41:14 PM] cs_riley: Yes. Magitek experiments are around analog systems. [7:41:21 PM] M K B: ALL THE PEWPEW [7:41:36 PM] Someguy Somewhere: still...the more complex the system the less likely it will work [7:41:44 PM] Kite Winters: the quantum computer's nature is order derived from chaos as am otive force and storage medium. >.> [7:41:56 PM] M K B: could also go with G:TT mania [7:42:10 PM] cs_riley: Quantum computing experiments with magic could be a thing yeah. [7:42:23 PM] cs_riley: it would either be Very Good or more likely Very Bad. [7:42:24 PM] Someguy Somewhere: that would be cutting edge stuff I assume [7:42:27 PM] cs_riley: very. [7:42:35 PM] Panyk: Do Not Taunt Happy Chaos Ball. [7:42:40 PM] cs_riley: nonbinary gender may be pretty normal by 2040 but nonbinary computers aren't yet :P [7:43:08 PM] cs_riley: the science would be there by then but the engineering less so [7:43:18 PM] Someguy Somewhere: in a "You gave us a magically powered AI Singularity? CUT to Terminator:Friendship is magic edition " [7:43:21 PM] Kite Winters: "Why are we running the experiment in an uninhabited bunker while ourselves being a hundred klicks away?" "Because 50 klicks wasn't enough for the last team to survive" [7:43:22 PM] cs_riley: LOL [7:43:42 PM] cs_riley: possible :P [7:43:55 PM] cs_riley: there's definitely enough empty space for crazy research facilities to be hidden away [7:43:58 PM] Kite Winters: "Stalker: Call of Wozniyak" [7:44:08 PM] cs_riley: LOL [7:44:18 PM] Panyk: I just put two and two together, notably the four of you, and realized that at some point there WILL be an xcom moment or fifty [7:44:34 PM] cs_riley: now as far as what is fey commonly seen as? [7:44:42 PM] cs_riley: elves, dwarves, goblins, and other humanoids, and monsters. [7:45:07 PM] cs_riley: the latter aren't really a concern for civilization as a whole, but the average joe still doesn't want to run into a wendigo on a subway platform at 3 in the morning. [7:45:59 PM] cs_riley: but there haven't been major incidents requiring the formation of superhero teams or anything. The cops took it as an excuse to expand their powers again and get even more formerly illegal weaponry. :P [7:45:59 PM] Someguy Somewhere: ok....similar question, how is magic commonly seen as? [7:46:11 PM] cs_riley: Magic is seen as strange. Nobody really knows how it works yet. [7:46:21 PM] cs_riley: similar to tech the average joe doesn't understand at all [7:46:40 PM] M K B: on the "formerly illegal weaponry" what's the word on that [7:46:43 PM] Someguy Somewhere: so...how common are magic user types? and what are people liek that [7:46:50 PM] M K B: (i love how in Satellite Reign -everyone- carries a handgun) [7:46:54 PM] cs_riley: depends on the region [7:47:19 PM] cs_riley: but for the most part, civilian rights to bear arms are still pretty much a US thing, with everywhere else being more restrictive. [7:47:30 PM] cs_riley: On the other hand with a lot more people being written into the margins, illegal weapons are more common. [7:47:57 PM] M K B: ya, but are we talking "lupara" or "phased plasma rifle in the 40 watt range" [7:48:08 PM] Someguy Somewhere: cough SINers, SINless and runners cough [7:48:18 PM] M K B: ? [7:48:22 PM] cs_riley: Magic users fall under two categories right now: wizards and witches. Wizards try to make order out of chaos and make magic "make sense". Witches use magic innately and by ritual, and largely got the name because wiccans were among the first organized groups of magic users who could reliably make shit work. [7:48:44 PM] Panyk: what about wizzards [7:49:14 PM] Someguy Somewhere: they get chased around by aninate luggage and run away from everything [7:49:21 PM] cs_riley: Energy weapons aren't super common, and civilians can't legally get them just about anywhere, because they were able to classify them as not-firearms and get away from the angry rednecks (who prefer bang to pew anyway) [7:49:27 PM] cs_riley: the tech is definitely there. [7:50:09 PM] M K B: that's what's on the book right now :p [7:50:18 PM] cs_riley: Lasers are short ranged, and generally abuse the hell out of the fact that they produce blinding reflections. They're more construction tools than weapons, as it stands. [7:51:05 PM] cs_riley: Plasma weapons suffer similar issues with range - attenuation in air is a pain - but plasma microgrenades, missiles, and plasma-explosive ammunition are the gold standard for fucking shit up. Armor against plasma weaponry is powered, heavy, and expensive, and it makes a mockery of conventional armor [7:53:36 PM] M K B: what kind of work:life balance does the average asshole have? [7:53:57 PM] M K B: like, what's it look like.... canada now? east germany 1985? sarajevo 2000? [7:54:15 PM] cs_riley: The average white collar joe? Terrible. Silicon valley now/2-3 years ago during the big slump. [7:55:07 PM] M K B: what, everyone's on adderall? [7:55:27 PM] cs_riley: a lot of people are, and you basically work the hours they tell you or good luck finding another job. [7:57:52 PM] M K B: hmm. this fits the notion that the malthusian equation is WORSE than now [7:58:00 PM] M K B: as in there are too many people per habitable land [7:58:12 PM] M K B: or that's not the case but something got weird? [7:58:31 PM] cs_riley: oh very much still the case in first world countries [7:58:34 PM] M K B: speaking of mecha shrine maidens, how about religions [7:58:37 PM] M K B: o? [7:58:45 PM] cs_riley: case is where people want to be vs don't want to be [7:58:48 PM] cs_riley: miw notsure on religions [7:59:01 PM] cs_riley: kinda out of energy to adhoc a setting and fill in gaps. Sorry it's not really ready for you guys. [7:59:34 PM] Someguy Somewhere: I assume that some faires may in fact be kinda dick ish and we may have a Stargate: SG1 issue with some claiming to be Gods [7:59:51 PM] cs_riley: I could see that happening. [8:00:16 PM] cs_riley: otherwise I figure the wiccans got a decent number of new initiates when magic started working on a larger scale [8:00:33 PM] M K B: yeah [8:00:46 PM] M K B: kite would your shrinemaiden character idea fit in this? [8:01:35 PM] M K B: [8:01:42 PM] M K B: [8:01:56 PM] cs_riley: yaydragon? :P [8:02:27 PM] M K B: is that a thing [8:02:44 PM] cs_riley: dragons? Yes [8:02:48 PM] cs_riley: commonly? no [8:02:51 PM] cs_riley: openly? no [8:03:04 PM] cs_riley: they don't really like the idea of getting chewed up by fighter planes :P [8:04:30 PM] M K B: so it's a.... once every cpl years thing over a continent? more? [8:04:36 PM] Panyk: I still do love the dresden interpretation of dragons [8:04:56 PM] Kite Winters: [8:00 PM] M K B: <<< kite would your shrinemaiden character idea fit in this?absolutely. semi-immortal not-quite humans who've been fringing it up since the last big era of magic and want to STAY fringe because you live longer that way, but there's also a Job To Do? definitely sounds like they'd fit [8:05:02 PM] Kite Winters: (sorry for quiet, had a huge bombshell hit) [8:05:03 PM] Panyk: 'they have the power to split this city in two if they really wanted to, but it's so much more amusing to watch you people flounder around at the little problems' [8:05:04 PM] cs_riley: Dragon sightings? Generally very rare, and not generally believed, as they make pretty good use of magic. ^^ [8:05:30 PM] Someguy Somewhere: ...great...INVISIBLE DRAGONS [8:05:33 PM] cs_riley: yes. [8:05:40 PM] Someguy Somewhere: ...roswell will have to expand [8:05:49 PM] Panyk: 'I get the ominous feeling that I SHOULD be standing in a shadow right now' [8:05:53 PM] cs_riley: they're not exactly happy being on earth either. [8:05:59 PM] cs_riley: MOST dragons are really tiny tho [8:06:11 PM] Panyk: I demand a pocket dragon. [8:06:11 PM] Someguy Somewhere: which begs the question...Where were they before? [8:06:19 PM] cs_riley: the other world! See doc. [8:06:33 PM] Someguy Somewhere: more then "other world"...what was it really like over there? [8:06:57 PM] Kite Winters: and witht he barriers erased, is there any 'other world' left in which earth has bled through, or is it all merged into 'new earth'? [8:07:04 PM] Panyk: it was otherworldly. [8:07:06 PM] Panyk: :D [8:07:09 PM] cs_riley: merged. [8:07:15 PM] Someguy Somewhere: ...so MK logic [8:07:26 PM] Someguy Somewhere: Mortal Kombat [8:07:38 PM] cs_riley: it was chaotic, magical, and free of large organized societies. Fey people are used to just doing their own thing and dealing with others in the moment. [8:08:29 PM] cs_riley: corporate structures and such are very alien to fey, because they're long term arrangements of expectations. [8:09:20 PM] cs_riley: whereas fey it's more "I need help from Y to do X, I'll go talk to Y and we'll do X" [8:09:38 PM] cs_riley: they never really got to mass production [8:10:39 PM] M K B: is there the seelie/unseelie thing wrt keeping your word [8:11:24 PM] cs_riley: I need to re-enlighten myself on the gaelic fey in that sense but yes, various mythologies will work more or less as written. [8:12:52 PM] Someguy Somewhere: ok...elephant in the room....Jebus [8:13:39 PM] Someguy Somewhere: fae involved in the Jewish, Chirstian and/or islamic stuff? [8:13:52 PM] cs_riley: no. [8:14:03 PM] cs_riley: they LARGELY still exist in the same state of their god does nothing. [8:14:49 PM] M K B: ironically i doubt it'd make much of a dent in attendance with evangelicals [8:14:59 PM] Someguy Somewhere: because you want some mythology, King Solomans Ring comes to mind anytime someone says Demon [8:16:52 PM] cs_riley: ya that's the thing [8:17:09 PM] cs_riley: overall, organized religion has faced steady decline for decades [8:17:26 PM] cs_riley: magic isn't really shaking too much up yet. [8:18:51 PM] M K B: noddle yayinertia~ so of 4b people how many are nonthuamn [8:19:05 PM] cs_riley: 0 [8:19:13 PM] cs_riley: that was the last ballpark human count [8:19:23 PM] cs_riley: how many fey is kinda vague but less than ten million [8:19:44 PM] Kite Winters: can humans and fey interbreed? [8:19:55 PM] Kite Winters: (after all, it will take approximately an hour after the immigration for someone tot ry) [8:20:07 PM] cs_riley: yep! They sure can, because sex and magic get along like pb and j [8:20:18 PM] Someguy Somewhere: and are about as messy! [8:20:35 PM] cs_riley: [8:22:57 PM] Someguy Somewhere: ....I swear I thought it was a polar bear! [8:23:05 PM] M K B: go home physics you're drun [8:23:08 PM] Someguy Somewhere: (first world problems for driving white cars) [8:23:29 PM] M K B: so this is BEFORE any sort of big sea change in how people live due to magic... interesting! [8:25:11 PM] Panyk: yuo see ivan, when put bayonet in barrel, yuo become of sharpshooter [8:25:21 PM] Someguy Somewhere: ....ow [8:25:39 PM] Panyk: I can't make sense of that picture any other way [8:25:50 PM] M K B: it's a rendering glitch [8:26:16 PM] cs_riley: ya, magic still new. :P [8:26:39 PM] Kite Winters: now, -was- there a prior Age of Magic where all the stories of magic and fae etc come from? [8:26:40 PM] Someguy Somewhere: as the only person here with a nagant in their possesion.....no, I have never had this problem with it [8:26:54 PM] M K B: it doesn't cause rendering glitches irl? aw. [8:26:55 PM] cs_riley: yes there was. [8:26:59 PM] cs_riley: the age of camelot was the last one [8:27:09 PM] *** M K B still playing that rpg btw, is verybasic but verycute *** [8:27:12 PM] cs_riley: we can work out how all that went last time [8:27:18 PM] M K B: It's only a model. [8:27:18 PM] cs_riley: which rpg? [8:27:32 PM] Someguy Somewhere: (the fourth world, cycles mayan calander, shadowrun comparisons go here yada yada) [8:27:55 PM] Panyk: seriously though, riley, what's going on in that picture? [8:29:33 PM] M K B: that one you got me on steam with fairies in it~ [8:30:20 PM] Kite Winters: the Zanzarrah one you linked at me? or another? there's lots of RPGS with fairies in it [8:31:37 PM] cs_riley: @panyk: the bayonet's mounted 90 degrees off true. not sure how they did it. :P [8:31:54 PM] M K B: ya that one [8:32:04 PM] Panyk: bigger question is 'why' really [8:32:17 PM] cs_riley: no idea [8:32:23 PM] cs_riley: and oh, you've been playing that! Glad you like it! :D [8:34:41 PM] M K B: chirp! [8:34:56 PM] Panyk: mosin bayonets are on the left of the barrel [8:35:01 PM] M K B: settingwise... isinteresting! So overall the world would be recognizable? [8:35:03 PM] Panyk: now, given that that one's on the RIGHT [8:35:07 PM] Panyk: this raises other questions [8:35:20 PM] M K B: did they upside down [8:35:28 PM] cs_riley: it might be upside down [8:35:43 PM] cs_riley: ya overall the world would be recognizable [8:35:44 PM] cs_riley: that's the idea [8:35:48 PM] Panyk: ,my explanation is still [russians] [8:36:15 PM] M K B: style of tech? beige boxes? cellfones? smar glasses? [8:37:28 PM] Someguy Somewhere: not an ipod future....everyone will wear sunglasses to protect from JJ abrams lens flare [8:38:21 PM] Panyk: '<Jonathan> Neat fact...the Mosin bayonet affects the barrel Harmonics, so much that most of them shoot way left without it attached <Panyk> Huh. <Panyk> That's... <Panyk> ...extremely russian c.c' [8:38:35 PM] cs_riley: smart glasses/ishit/etc for the average joe. Operators operating operations operate a more black-boxy open source kind of tech [8:38:50 PM] Panyk: op op op op op [8:38:54 PM] Panyk: ACK ACK ACK ACK ACK [8:38:56 PM] cs_riley: rofl barrel [8:39:09 PM] M K B: ... mars attack? [8:39:30 PM] M K B: swords vs guns vs shields? [8:40:06 PM] cs_riley: guns. [8:40:08 PM] Someguy Somewhere: physics are still physics....and apparently plasma weapons too...so I'm going to go out on a limb and say Dakka wins [8:40:13 PM] cs_riley: the answer is very definitely guns. [8:40:24 PM] cs_riley: though when you want to be sneaky, blades beat bullets, and always have. [8:40:40 PM] cs_riley: and a riot shield's never a bad thing to have in a brawl [8:41:09 PM] Kite Winters: if there's an option for a magically active person who really likes Metroid to have a pistol/sword/whip thing for their Zero Suit cosplay that actually WORKS as a PDW, count me in ;p [8:41:27 PM] Kite Winters: (since physics and energy-swords simply will not get along) [8:42:06 PM] Panyk: Stabby energy swords do! [8:42:11 PM] Panyk: Slashy ones do not. [8:42:20 PM] Someguy Somewhere: thats a thermal lance [8:42:27 PM] Panyk: Yep. :P [8:42:30 PM] M K B: eyup [8:42:31 PM] Someguy Somewhere: evidently you can make them out of bacon these days [8:42:37 PM] M K B: eeeeyup [8:42:46 PM] cs_riley: yes kite, you can have that. :P [8:43:03 PM] Kite Winters: if it only -stabs-, that's just not a sword. a sword that can neither slash nor chop is not a sword. [8:43:05 PM] cs_riley: doesn't even need magic [8:43:26 PM] cs_riley: could be a plasma gun that ignites a flexible thermic lance [8:44:14 PM] M K B: it might want to be magic to last longer [8:45:11 PM] Someguy Somewhere: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1lr5OUjFDkg for your energy sword [8:45:18 PM] cs_riley: yeah [8:45:23 PM] cs_riley: magic could be used to consume less fuel [8:45:45 PM] cs_riley: but your pdw cosplay gun doesn't necessarily need to have a massive ammo capacity. [8:46:06 PM] cs_riley: I continue to make the point that your carry pistol does not in fact need you to have 3 banana mags in your pant legs. [8:46:22 PM] Kite Winters: true. [8:46:45 PM] Someguy Somewhere: ...they have glock Beta Mags for that [8:46:49 PM] Kite Winters: but a pistol fires once. if you're wanting to use it as a deterrent, someone who is attacking you only has to wait for your lightsaber to run out of fuel, it doesn't work as a PDW. [8:47:05 PM] M K B: miw, given how payday heists usually go.... [8:47:21 PM] M K B: another thing [8:47:22 PM] M K B: magic [8:47:44 PM] M K B: how easy is it to idk, fuck with people's memories, or be invisible by SEPF, or generally do catburglar things [8:47:55 PM] Someguy Somewhere: who needs another clip [8:48:11 PM] cs_riley: fucking with peoples memories: hard, channeling magic into people's brains is expensive [8:48:27 PM] cs_riley: SEPF: hard. Same reason. Optical camouflage easy. [8:48:50 PM] cs_riley: bending light is easier than bending brains unless people are weak willed derps [8:49:08 PM] M K B: :) [8:49:50 PM] cs_riley: enchanters and hexers in that sense are TERRIFYING because they can pull off stuff like that [8:49:58 PM] Someguy Somewhere: So...dresden files logic....changing the physical world is easy compared to changing another beings biology. [8:50:12 PM] cs_riley: yes [8:50:37 PM] M K B: noddle [8:50:48 PM] M K B: if in a fight, how hard is it to heal? [8:51:16 PM] cs_riley: self much easier than others, but it's easier to apply magic to the willing. [8:52:07 PM] cs_riley: and yes, this means that you can potentially trick people into being mind controlled [8:52:10 PM] Panyk: I would think that with magic being a force of chaos, the opposite is true, dresden magic is orderly :P More that CONTROLLING the change enough to get anything worthwhile out of it would be the tough part [8:52:53 PM] M K B: miw self preservation instinct gota count for smth for that [8:52:58 PM] cs_riley: ya [8:53:16 PM] cs_riley: drugs would help too re making people more suceptible to magic [8:53:28 PM] cs_riley: though I see that as something that in setting is mostly untapped as of yet [8:54:12 PM] M K B: so institutionally, there's this new thing but we don't know what to do it yet [8:54:16 PM] M K B: ya internet circa 1994? [8:54:22 PM] cs_riley: ya [8:55:10 PM] Kite Winters: [8:52 PM] cs_riley: <<< and yes, this means that you can potentially trick people into being mind controlledno shit. plenty do that without magic. [8:55:21 PM] cs_riley: ya [8:55:58 PM] M K B: chirpchirp~ want me to compile this? [8:56:08 PM] cs_riley: sure! I took some notes but they're sloppy [8:57:55 PM] M K B: nyan can do i think! [8:58:12 PM] *** M K B thinks what else needs sorted at start *** [8:58:14 PM] M K B: o ya [8:58:37 PM] M K B: what's your avg city look like and whats your avg stretch of countryside look like? (as compared to places today) [8:59:15 PM] cs_riley: Cities are denser, sprawlier, and country is emptier [9:00:09 PM] M K B: noddle [9:00:50 PM] M K B: what's food look like? after a big war, well, stuff goes on the ration, is that gone? if gone, what do most people eat? gmo? [9:01:17 PM] cs_riley: gmo, soylent, factory farmed meat [9:01:34 PM] cs_riley: chickpeas have become a staple everywhere, a few other eastern staples propagated, etc. [9:01:38 PM] Someguy Somewhere: clone muscule tissue steak.... [9:01:45 PM] cs_riley: ^ clonemeat ya [9:02:33 PM] M K B: noddle [9:02:56 PM] M K B: how's the ecosystem? would magic eventually help it? [9:03:22 PM] Someguy Somewhere: taking 4 billion people off the planet would make a dent in our carbon footprint [9:04:11 PM] M K B: i'm kinda thinking a bit of a retro-cyberpunk look for a lot of places simple because there was a bunch of industrial disruption and most people don't seem to have a lot of income, so you'd see smartglasses next to CRT tv's in india or greece or brazil for example [9:04:47 PM] Kite Winters: and would see a lot of knockoffs of your 'google cardboard' from MDRS. [9:05:37 PM] cs_riley: ecosystem dramatically improving, fossil fuel tech is mostly not used, part of increased population density has been recovering biodiversity [9:05:59 PM] cs_riley: and ya re retro-cyberpunk that sounds relatively right [9:09:14 PM] M K B: so semiautomated tractors outside and electric cars and scooters in cities, with most people using buses? [9:09:17 PM] M K B: hmm. [9:09:26 PM] *** M K B thinks about a conspiracy theory *** [9:10:01 PM] cs_riley: ya that's kinda it, people are complacent sheep and just work sleep derp consume. It's more efficient for them to do so in more fixed patterns, if you like conspiracies. [9:10:12 PM] Kite Winters: probably anyplace with enough of a grid to do so, conversion from buses to trams. [9:11:23 PM] Someguy Somewhere: air travel? [9:14:08 PM] cs_riley: yeah, we'd probably see more trains [9:14:16 PM] cs_riley: air travel: not really any better than today. :P [9:14:22 PM] cs_riley: still expensive, still sucks [9:14:31 PM] Someguy Somewhere: sea travel? [9:15:27 PM] Panyk: I'd imagine little emphasis on travel tech if society's that placid [9:15:54 PM] M K B: also miw, i'd imagine nto a lot of people can afford to [9:15:59 PM] Someguy Somewhere: shipping is still a global concern [9:16:14 PM] Someguy Somewhere: with less people in it goods still have to travel from place to place [9:16:15 PM] M K B: i think we'd see a return of vacationing nearby rather than idk, italians going to sharm el sheikh for midsummer [9:16:16 PM] cs_riley: sea travel: shipping containers and cruise liners for derps to take derp vacations on [9:16:24 PM] M K B: ya but that's easier [9:16:32 PM] cs_riley: ^ [9:17:08 PM] Someguy Somewhere: also we have fae...who if they're world merged...might still have a naval/air/land presesnece [9:17:10 PM] cs_riley: the big diff is a lack of dependence on fossil fuels, so air liners are more efficient but slower :P [9:17:12 PM] Kite Winters: do we have Shadowrun style capsule hotels for super-low-rent accommodation, and would there be capsule-shipping for low-cost seatravel? [9:17:22 PM] Someguy Somewhere: thor had flying goats pulling a chariot [9:17:33 PM] Someguy Somewhere: noah had his ark [9:17:33 PM] cs_riley: hmm, coffin hotels? Idk if that would catch on. [9:17:36 PM] cs_riley: maybe [9:18:07 PM] Panyk: http://imgur.com/gallery/QuY463e have a NOPE, to derail everything [9:18:23 PM] cs_riley: NICE :D [9:19:42 PM] M K B: eeeeel [9:19:44 PM] M K B: eeeeeeeeek [9:19:58 PM] Someguy Somewhere: Eye see what you did there [9:20:14 PM] M K B: hm. so what kinda nonhumans are around~ and... ost importantly; if the merge happened and can't unhappen, wouldn't most of them be very angry at being displaced [9:20:27 PM] cs_riley: tbd [9:20:39 PM] cs_riley: I kinda ran out of energy an hour ago [9:20:49 PM] cs_riley: never really stopped getting poked >_> [9:20:54 PM] Someguy Somewhere: to be continued [9:20:58 PM] Someguy Somewhere: sorry for poking [9:21:01 PM] cs_riley: ya [9:21:28 PM] cs_riley: not huge deal but yeah I don't really have energy for going back over that stuff atm [9:22:40 PM] M K B: nyan! [9:22:44 PM] M K B: pets [9:22:45 PM] M K B: ninis? [9:22:49 PM] M K B: is interestingsetting! [9:22:53 PM] *** M K B pets *** [9:22:57 PM] M K B: thankes for sharing it! [9:23:00 PM] M K B: i really like it [9:23:58 PM] M K B: ok to do some writies? [9:24:04 PM] Someguy Somewhere: it's an idea [9:25:12 PM] cs_riley: Go for it! [9:26:48 PM] cs_riley: sry but the whole feeling of incompleteness and even stuff that's already written down being called missing is really draining. It just felt really negative and a lot more "this isn't enough" than "yes, and" [9:26:57 PM] cs_riley: so ima probably drop this [9:27:15 PM] cs_riley: might be a while before I have energy to do this again [9:31:01 PM] Someguy Somewhere: thats your call to make [9:31:07 PM] M K B: miw [9:31:39 PM] Kite Winters: rest, and see how you go? decisions need not be final. and the asking of questions is happening because interested in the setting and getting a brainshape of it. [9:31:46 PM] cs_riley: yes [9:33:06 PM] cs_riley: it's relaly hard to even explain because I know the explanation already has been declared not good enough and the status quo will continue, so I'm out [9:49:57 PM] M K B: miw! The explanation was excellent. Thanks for telling us about your setting, I for one can't wait playing in it whenever you feel like it but no pressure, and thanks for letting us be a part of your creative process! Please know that it's perfectly okay to say "Hey, I'd like to tap Kay to figure out sea travel in this setting coz Kay knows more than me", or the like, if you feel it is best. [9:50:25 PM] cs_riley: sure~ [9:50:27 PM] cs_riley: go for it [9:51:01 PM] Someguy Somewhere: Thanks for sharing your world with us. [9:52:08 PM] M K B: chirpchirp! thankies again~ [9:52:46 PM] cs_riley: the whole formal thankyou just creeps me the fuck out tho ^^ [9:53:54 PM] Someguy Somewhere: well I'd try to be less formal...but it's hared to Txt a fist bump or pat on the back [9:55:30 PM] *** M K B fistbumps someone's back, may have gotten it wrong *** [9:55:54 PM] Someguy Somewhere: thats pretty much just punching people at that point [9:56:18 PM] M K B: huggles riley instead [9:56:21 PM] M K B: miwfair~ [9:56:24 PM] cs_riley: Meow |
