Salgar

Salgar is the only major land divided between two governments. Due to a mapping mistake that was propagated by bureaucratic inefficiency, Salgar was annexed by Cascadians as "Land Emilia" during their last expansionist period, their colonizing efforts starting from the land's eastern end and not realizing that the western half of the land was already occupied.

Unfortunately, for reasons of national pride, it took the Commonwealth nearly sixty years to acknowledge their mistake -- by then Cascadian colonists were in their third generation, and the younger colonists claimed they had as much birthright as the earlier Salgarians to be there.

Today, the eastern Emilians (who still claim to be part of the Commonwealth even after the Cascadian government made it clear that there would be no military help) and the western Salgarians are engaged in a low intensity conflict that has persisted for over a century, either by means of guerrilla war in the central jungle or by means of raids going around to the ports.

Land Salgar is unusually warm for its location, and its middle section is covered by a dense jungle known for harboring mostly alpine life, quite possibly the only original-ecosystem jungle remaining in the Slipstream.

Pirates have profited greatly from the political situation and have been using Salgar as a means of laundering stolen goods; the most notable buccaneer operating in the area today is the swashbuckling Sankodan, nominally allied with the Salgarians.
